The Sri Lanka Scenic Train Ride: 2026 Update

Current routes, schedules, updated ticket fares, and post-cyclone operations.

Scenic Train Ride in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s central highland train journey is widely celebrated as one of the most picturesque rail rides in the world. Winding through misty emerald tea plantations, dramatic mountain passes, and historic stone viaducts, it is an absolute bucket-list experience for anyone visiting the island.

Important Travel Update: Cyclone Dithwa

Due to the recent impacts of Cyclone Dithwa, full long-distance train routes are temporarily restricted. Currently, passenger services are limited to two main daily trains running strictly between Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) and Badulla (and vice versa).

Current Operational Route & Schedule

While Cyclone Dithwa has temporarily altered the full route, the operating segment between Nanu Oya and Badulla captures the single most stunning stretch of the entire train ride—including the iconic crossing over the Nine Arches Bridge in Ella!

Route Departure Arrival (approx.)
Nanu Oya to Badulla (Morning) 09:30 AM 12:45 PM
Nanu Oya to Badulla (Afternoon) 03:15 PM 06:30 PM
Badulla to Nanu Oya (Morning) 08:30 AM 11:45 AM
Badulla to Nanu Oya (Afternoon) 01:30 PM 04:45 PM

🚂 The Wednesday Special: Ella Odyssey

If you plan your itinerary for mid-week, you can experience a truly special journey. Every Wednesday, Sri Lanka Railways operates the luxury Ella Odyssey tourist train along this route. Please note that the Ella Odyssey departs from Nanu Oya at 01:00 PM.

Unlike standard daily trains, the Ella Odyssey is specifically designed for sightseers. It intentionally slows down or briefly stops at key scenic locations (such as viewpoints near Nine Arches Bridge and dramatic waterfalls) so passengers can snap pictures directly from their seats.
